THE SYMBOL MURAL, August 2013
We began this project by looking at the work of Bernard Williams, a contemporary artist who has combined simple symbols to tell more complex stories. After thinking of our own lives as stories, each student chose one event, memory, or moment to share and created a Williams-inspired symbol to represent that part of her/his personal history. We then joined everyone's symbol together, thus creating a mural that represents each class as a collection of individual experiences. The mural will remain on display in the classroom for the remainder of the year.

Can you match the following student descriptions with the correct symbol?
"I usually can find out stuff about computers on my own. I know more about them and they fascinate me. I have had that talent for many years and people over my age sometimes are confused about something on a computer and I solve it for them." (Paolo, 7A)
"My symbol represents my love of reptiles. Ever since I knew what a reptile was I wanted one. I wanted a snake the most and I wanted a python. But my family was not snake people so we compromised and I got a leopard gecko." (Gia, 7B)
"My symbol represents music, a big part of my life. I sing in choir at school, play guitar, and have sang since I was little." (Vera, 7A)
"It represents one of my happiest memories, covering the slide in shaving cream and going down it." (Stewart, 7B)
"This symbol represents a reoccurring dream I had. Near the end, my brother and mom were in the kitchen. There was an island and a rack above the island that held things like pots, pans, etc. My brother began to chase my mom around the kitchen, then took his head off and kept chasing my mom. Then he threw it at her and the dream ended." (Abby, 7B)
