"OUR BELOVED BOSQUE CREATURES" MOSAIC MURAL, May 2014
Despite being short on time, this year's seventh graders ended the year by completing a stunning, 16 x 4 foot mosaic mural for campus. Wanting to do something different from previous years, we decided to make four distinct panels and work with a limited but high contrast color palette. Thematically, each panel is loosely dedicated to a specific group of creatures that live just beyond our school buildings: Birds, Insects, Reptiles/Amphibians and Mammals (as represented through their tracks). Each student (or small group of students) created a silhouette of a chosen creature or footprint using black glass. All sections pitched in by arranging and securing the black objects, filling in the background colors and, finally, grouting each panel. We unveiled the gorgeous, final piece at our last morning meeting of the year just hours after it had been permanently installed at the entrance to the middle school (just before the 6th grade pod). Please check out a slideshow of our process (below) and please stop by the middle school building to see the mural for yourself!
